In May this year, the Pennsylvania SPCA received an urgent call from a very concerned neighbour. She had come across a heartbreaking situation, where 17 dogs were being kept in appalling conditions.
The rescue team rushed to the property, and were shocked by what they found.
A second chance for Coda
"These dogs, which would normally have lovely white fur, were almost hairless. Their skin was covered in scabs and wounds", explained the SPCA in a statement.
Among them, was Coda. And despite all the suffering he had endured, he immediately stood out.
His infectious enthusiasm and love for life surprised everyone around him, and he became a firm favourite with the staff involved in his care.
"Coda was one of the most outgoing dogs", recalled the shelter's spokesperson. "He loved people and seemed to know we were there to help him".
A beautiful transformation
The vets created a special diet for the gentle boy, and slowly but surely his coat began to grow back. From bald and starving, he quickly transformed into a white, fluffy teddy bear.
Coda went on to spend some time with a foster carer, before finding the perfect new home.
Now named Bo, his family are thrilled to have him in their lives. "He's the best dog ever!", they told the Pennsylvania SPCA. "All he wants is love. He wants to be friends with everyone he meets".
Bo has now started a wonderful new life, surrounded by all the love and care he deserves. And for the team at the SPCA, it's stories like this that encourage them to carry on.
"It's for dogs like Coda that we do what we do", the spokesperson explained. "When he left with his new family you could never tell he had experienced so much suffering. He was truly happy".
