When she investigated further, Veronica discovered three terrified and malnourished dogs left to fend for themselves.
Daily mountain trek
Determined to help, Veronica began a daily trek up the mountain, offering food and patiently gaining their trust. Over time, the dogs grew accustomed to Veronica's presence and even began eating from her hand. The next step was to get them off the mountain.
Veronica gathered together a team of rescuers. Together, they hauled equipment up the mountain and constructed a makeshift cage. Remarkably, it worked, and the trio of mastiffs, Princess George, Grace, and Steve, were finally safe. But they had a long road to recovery.
Cheri Wulff Lucas, a renowned dog behaviourist and trainer, took on the challenging task of rehabilitating the dogs. They were initially unapproachable, couldn't be put on a lead and were extremely fearful. Fortunately, Princess George, Grace, and Steve responded well to Cheri's training but were still too nervous to put up for adoption.
Forever home
Cheri let the dogs live with her temporarily. However, it wasn't long before she changed her mind and adopted them. The dogs thrived in her supportive environment and even helped Cheri with her work as a trainer. In fact, the trio even helped rehabilitate another dog named Andi, who had suffered from seven years of neglect. Their presence made a remarkable difference, and Cheri adopted Andi too.
Princess George, Grace, and Steve have spent over three years with Cheri, and their transformation from scared and anxious dogs to playful and social pets is astounding.
