Pregnant Dachsie's owner goes to bed: the next morning, she almost faints in shock

A Dachshund from Leicestershire named Winnie gave birth to an astonishing number of puppies, leaving her owner, Rayma Jones, in disbelief.

Winnie, a three-year-old sausage dog, had a scan during her pregnancy, predicting she was carrying six puppies.

Six baby sausages

Around five days before her due date, Winnie the Dachshund began displaying signs that the puppies were about to come. At 11:30 pm, Rayma heard Winnie’s first pup squeaking. Two hours later, another arrived, followed by four more just 20 minutes apart. The sixth, seventh, and eighth pups came quickly, followed by the tenth pup 40 minutes later. Rayma, exhausted from helping Winnie through the night, thought the labour had finished and went to bed at 6:30 am.

To her astonishment, when she checked on Winnie four hours later, there were 11 puppies, varying in colour from silver to chocolate to tan. Rayma said:

“I was completely surprised. I counted the little ones over and over again. I never thought she would have another puppy when I wasn’t looking. She’s such a wonderful mum.”

Remarkable feat

This remarkable feat surpasses the typical Dachshund litter size of one to six puppies. Guinness World Records doesn’t track breed-specific records, but this could be a record for the dachshund breed. Notably, 24 puppies born to a Neapolitan Mastiff in the UK were the largest known dog litter in 2004.

Rayma intends to sell the puppies once they reach eight weeks old. She explained,

“I can’t live with 11 puppies, or I’ll become the crazy dog lady!”

In the meantime, Winnie enjoys being a devoted mum to her huge litter, ensuring each puppy gets plenty of milk and attention.

Well done, Winnie!
