A regular dog walk turned into an incredible discovery for a couple in southeastern France when they stumbled upon a treasure trove of 400,000 euros.

During their forest walk, the couple’s canine companion caught their attention by frantically pawing at the edge of a firebreak trail.

Astonishing discovery

Intrigued, the couple investigated further and unearthed the astonishing contents of the partially exposed metal box: a whopping 400,000 euros, neatly stashed in 200-euro notes.

Realising the seriousness of their discovery, the couple promptly reported it to the local police. An extensive investigation ensued, encompassing interviews, searches, and evidence collection, as authorities sought to ascertain the origin of the money.

But, despite the police’s best efforts, the source of the funds, whether legitimate or illicit, remained elusive.

Splitting the treasure

Fast forward more than two years, and the Toulon public prosecutor decided to close the investigation due to insufficient evidence. Yet, there was still an important question: how would the 400,000 euros be divided?

According to Article 716 of the Civil Code, the buried metal box qualified as a “treasure,” entitling its discoverer to ownership if found on their land. In this case, however, the land belonged to the municipality of La Londe-les-Maures. Consequently, the municipality was entitled to half the windfall, totalling 200,000 euros. The couple, whose dog had made the discovery, received the remaining half.

Despite this resolution, the mystery surrounding the origin of the money remained unsolved, leaving the source of this substantial sum shrouded in secrecy.

Now, that’s what you call a productive dog walk!
