Canterbury Cathedral announces new policy that will make every dog owner happy

It's dogs allowed in Canterbury Cathedral. From right now, pooches can accompany their people on tours of the church. Great news!

More dogs in more places is better for everyone. That's just a fact. They make anywhere a brighter place to be. More facts.

Canterbury Cathedral is the latest public building to welcome all dogs through its doors. The iconic landmark had previously restricted furry visitors to guide and assistance dogs.

Praise be to dogs

But there's a catch. The new dog-friendly policy is on a trial basis. But if people and their pooches behave themselves, the Cathedral will make it permanent.

The idea is to make the site more accessible and attractive to all visitors. The Dean of Canterbury, the Revd David Monteith, said, "I am delighted to be able to trial this new policy for dogs and to enable more people to visit because of it."

Water bowls will be placed near the visitor centre. They'll help keep dogs cool and hydrated on warm days. And the rules for owners are simple: keep your dog on a leash at all times and clean up any accidents. Fair enough.

Dogs in churches

This is the second major UK cathedral to introduce a dog-friendly policy this year. Back in May, Chichester Cathedral announced that all dogs are welcome. Well-behaved dogs are also allowed into Ely, Durham, Lincoln, and Wells Cathedrals.

Salisbury Cathedral probably had the most experience with doggie visitors as they've allowed dogs on their grounds for years! They even made a special dogs-only tour video a while back, and if that doesn't make you want to visit their Cathedral, we don't know what will!

"Dogs are such an important part of our daily lives, bringing so much love and joy to their families," said Chichester Cathedral's Dean, the Revd Canon Simon Holland, who owns a pair of Border Collies. "We hope that by making the Cathedral a dog-friendly space, our visitors will be able to make more meaningful memories with their canine companions."

Amen to that!
