While some people may describe Mugsy as ugly, to his family, he’s a beautiful and unique dog, from nose to tail.

You’ve heard the story about the ugly duckling who turned into a swan? Well, imagine if it worked the other way.

When Mugsy was adopted 12 years ago, he was a sweet little pup with light blue eyes that everyone thought would grow into a handsome dog, like a Labrador.

But it wouldn’t take long for Mugsy’s family to realise that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The family adopted Mugsy from a rescue shelter after falling in love with him at first sight. But after a year, the family noticed that Mugsy’s features were changing. He developed an extreme underbite, wonky teeth and bulging eyes. They don't know why Mugsy’s features changed so much and wonder if it was down to genetics. When rescuers initially found Mugsy, he lived in an abandoned house with his sister and father. His mum was nowhere around.

Mugsy and his sister Lily, who the family also adopted, look similar. She also has bulgy eyes and wonky teeth but not the same extreme underbite.

A face only a mother would love

After being diagnosed with hypothyroidism, Mugsy is now on a special diet to help him lose weight. But his looks, weight, smelly breath and quirks don’t bother his family. In a video shared on YouTube by Mugsy’s human sister, it’s revealed that he is “super affectionate and super funny”, and when his family leave the house, he will sit in the middle of the living room and howl. He also loves sitting in small, enclosed spaces, making him feel safe and snuggly. So, of course, his family built him a tipi for him to curl up in.

Here's Mugsy's story:

While Mugsy may not win any beauty contests, he is an adorable, loving and playful dog that brings so much joy to his family.
