Siberian Huskies are one of the most popular primitive dog breeds, and have especially grown in popularity since Game of Thrones became a world-wide hit! Huskies are beautiful, intelligent dogs, but they need A LOT of exercise, and they’re unlikely to obey perfectly most of the time. Huskies do what they want, when they want! 

Second only in popularity to the Siberian Husky, Malamutes are also a popular choice for people who want a wolfy-looking dog. Malamutes also require lots of exercise, but they tend to be calmer than Huskies and a little more affectionate. They are, however, significantly larger, so take this into account before you adopt one! 

The Alaskan Klee Kai looks like a miniature version of the Husky. A relatively young breed, it is not yet recognised by the FCI or the Kennel Club. Much like their larger counterparts, Klee Kais are energetic, love to howl, and shed A LOT. They are, however, much smaller and therefore easier to transport and to keep in an apartment or city. 

Northern Inuits are a relatively new breed born in the UK. It was this breed which was used during the filming of Game of Thrones – so you can guess where their popularity comes from! Because they have some GSD in their blood, Northern Inuits are quite sociable and trainable. They are, however, extremely attached to their owners and are therefore renowned for their separation anxiety.

The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is about 6% wolf and 94% German Shepherd. Despite this, an expert hand is required for these dogs who can be a challenge to train and need intensive socialisation. When well brought up, a Czechoslovakian is a loyal and affectionate pet who grows very attached to their family.

The Saarloos Wolfdog is another cross between the GSD and the wolf. It is estimated that the wolf content in the Saarloos is between 18 and 33%. As with the Czechoslovakian, the most important thing to know when getting a Saarloos is that they require intense socialisation at their youngest age so as to curb their strongest hunting, territorial and protective instincts.

The White Swiss Shepherd is basically a white GSD. They are very similar to the GSD in personality (smart, trainable, loyal and affectionate), but they tend to be a little more sensitive. Make sure you teach your dog how to stay on their own from a young age, lest they develop separation anxiety. White Swiss Shepherds remind us of arctic wolves, don’t you think so?

The Swedish Vallhund looks like a cross between a wolf and a Corgi. Yet, it’s not related in any way to either of those! Vallhunds were actually bred as herding dogs in Sweden. They’re very smart and energetic, which means they make great family pets for people with the time and energy. But because they need so much mental and physical stimulation, they’re really not for everyone!
