Dog preferences are changing in the UK, a study has revealed, with the former most popular breed in the country now the fastest-declining.

The study, by Briefcase PR, found that several of the UK's most popular breeds were now in steep decline, with some smaller breeds actually gaining momentum.

Analysing breed registrations from 2024 and 2025, the study shed light on some surprising results.

The decline of the Frenchie

Overtaking the Labrador Retriever as the UK's most popular breed in 2018, the French Bulldog recorded the fastest decline, falling by 6,039 registrations.

The Frenchie was followed closely by the Labrador Retriever, with a drop of 4,222 and the Miniature Smooth Haired Dachshund at 2,756.

Also on the list was the Cocker Spaniel, the Bulldog and the Pug

Rare breeds rising

Interestingly some rare breeds seem to moving in the opposite direction, with the Lagotto Romagnolo and the Spinone Italiano on the list of the fastest rising.

At the top of the list was the Miniature Long Haired Dachshund and the Italian Greyhound, with 244 and 118 more registrations across the two years respectively.
