A passing driver spotted the poor dog.
He immediately contacted the police to ask for help.
A dangerous rescue
When the police officer arrived at the scene, the dog was on the central reservation next to the highway. He was in real danger. The officer began to approach the dog, but the poor animal started barking as he got closer. He was clearly a little scared.
The officer was worried that the frightened dog might try to run off and dart into the traffic. He managed to get close enough to slip a lead around his neck. He then tried to walk him back to his car, but he hadn't realised the dog was injured. He couldn't walk. So, the officer carried him and placed him safely in the boot of his car.
A long road to recovery
The officer then took the dog to the police station. A scan of his microchip revealed that he was registered to a charity called Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption. The dog's name was Lincoln, and he had been adopted from the charity as a puppy 8 years ago. Rescuers from the charity were able to contact Lincoln's owner, but they never received a response.
So, the rescuers decided to take the dog into their care. They took him to a veterinary clinic for a check-up. X-rays revealed that Lincoln had dislocated and fractured hips. Lincoln would need surgery to be able to walk again.
Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption has launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover the costs of Lincoln's operations and post-operative care.
Lincoln has already had his first hip operation, with the second scheduled for sometime in December. We wish him a very speedy recovery.
