Tributes have poured in for Freddie, the well-known Skirving Street cat who became a much-loved and familiar figure in Glasgow’s Southside.

Freddie, affectionately nicknamed the “Mayor of Shawlands”, passed away on 31 October at the age of 20 after a sudden illness.

His owner, Barbara Prior, said she has been deeply moved by the flowers, messages, and stories shared by neighbours and those who followed Freddie online.

Flowers and memories for a local favourite

Barbara described Freddie as a true community cat, offering comfort, companionship, and countless moments of joy.

She recalled examples of people who found reassurance in his gentle nature, with some visiting him during difficult times simply for the calm he brought.

A fearless character who captured hearts

Freddie’s confident spirit was clear from kittenhood. Rescued from a car roof, he quickly became known for wandering into shops, climbing onto soft-top cars, and greeting passersby without hesitation. Barbara said he was impossible to keep indoors and embraced life outdoors with complete fearlessness.

Since news of his passing, locals have shared heartfelt tributes, remembering Freddie as a constant feature of the street, a source of comfort, and a small character who made a big impact. His absence, Barbara said, has left their home and community feeling profoundly empty.

RIP Freddie.
