The story unfolds in Heraklion, on the Greek island of Crete. A shower of red mud had just coated the city, leaving the streets slippery and treacherous. From the safety of her gym, Elena noticed a small grey and white creature with red-stained paws, pacing in front of the window.
The kitten wasn't just watching; she was following Elena's movements. "When I got closer to the window, she looked me straight in the eye and meowed," she recalls. On closer inspection, the situation was alarming: the kitten was losing her fur in patches and her body was covered in sores. Despite the pain, the little animal was desperately seeking human contact.
A morning rescue mission
Haunted by the image of the kitten alone in the night, Elena returned the next morning with a tin of sardines. She eventually found the little cat, who greeted her with a surprising amount of trust for a stray. "She was incredibly gentle, not at all fearful," explains Elena.
A quick visual check revealed a grim situation: fleas, skin sores, and extreme thinness, but with a swollen belly (a sign of parasites). On Monday morning, Elena and her mother took the little rescue to the vet. Against all odds, during the examination, the kitten started to purr and knead on the consultation table, as if she knew she was finally safe.
A temporary shelter amidst renovations
Elena tried to contact local shelters, but they were all full. Although her own dog doesn't get along with other animals, she couldn't bring herself to put the kitten back on the street. So, she paused the renovation work on a part of her house to create a safe, separate space for the little cat.
Today, the kitten is regaining her strength, sleeping in a warm place, and receiving her medication. Although she is now safe, she is still looking for her forever home. In the meantime, Elena continues to shower her with love, amazed by the resilience of this little creature who had the courage to knock on the right door.
