Rescuers followed strange cries echoing across a Kansas field and found six little faces peeking out from a storm drain, desperate for help.

Rescuers at the Kansas Humane Society faced an unexpected challenge this summer when faint cries drifted across a field near the Murfin Animal Care Campus.

Following the sound, staff traced the noise to a concrete storm drain hidden in the grass. Inside, six frightened puppies peered out from the darkness.

Patience and treats

Armed with patience and a few tempting treats, the team coaxed each pup to safety. Once out of danger, the dogs were taken to the nearby Wichita Animal Shelter for a required stray hold before being returned to the humane society for medical checks and care.

Staff provided vaccinations, comfortable bedding and plenty of affection. Each puppy was given a name, Abby, Ellie, Greg, Lev, Mike and Tommy, and soon revealed playful personalities. “The puppies were very wiggly, especially Ellie,” a spokesperson said, describing them as sociable and full of energy.

New homes lined up

News of the rescue quickly spread across the local community, sparking a wave of interest in adoption. Within just two days, all six had been placed in new homes or reserved for adoption.

Now safe and cherished, the once-abandoned puppies are beginning new lives filled with warmth, companionship and brighter days ahead.
