In November 2024, the Pit Bull Terrier cross was rescued by Best Friends Animal Society. She had been wandering the streets of New York, hungry and scared, until a foster family came forward to help her. A few weeks later, she found a family ready to adopt her.
But sadly, her adoption only lasted six months. Faced with increasingly busy schedules, the adopters decided to return Macchiato to the rescue, as they felt they were no longer able to care for her properly.
A devastating diagnosis
Back at the rescue, volunteers did all they could to console poor Macchiato.
When they noticed an unusual lump on the dog's neck, they were devastated. A biopsy was quickly carried out, with heartbreaking results: Macchiato was suffering from an aggressive, inoperable cancer that had already spread to several lymph nodes. No treatment could cure her.
Macchiato's final chapter
Despite this terrible prognosis, the charity felt Macchiato deserved to live her final months in a loving environment. She needed a family prepared to accompany her through palliative care, in what's known as "fospice" care.
Mo, a long-time volunteer with the charity, answered the call. He knew Macchiato well having fostered her after her rescue.
Without hesitation, he agreed to take her back into his home, offering her a final chapter filled with as much love as he possible could. Thanks to Mo, Macchiato won't have to face this alone. Her remaining days will be filled with attention, affection and all the home comforts she deserves.
