On 29 May 2025, a group of four hikers set out for Grießbachalm near Häselgehr in Austria’s Reutte district. With mild temperatures of 16.5°C and clear skies, conditions seemed ideal.
The group brought along two dogs, both of which were running off-lead, a decision that would soon prove fatal.
Owner's desperate attempt to save her dog
As they approached a waterfall, one of the dogs suddenly became agitated and bolted ahead. Within seconds, he had vanished from sight. In a panic, the 43-year-old owner from Munich chased after him.
Blinded by fear, she reached the edge of a steep drop and attempted to descend by sliding on her bottom. But the slope was treacherously slick, and she lost control. She fell approximately 80 metres, tumbling several times down the near-vertical terrain.
Emergency services are unable to help
The group immediately called emergency services, and a rescue helicopter was dispatched. Sadly, the doctor could only confirm her death at the scene.
According to police, the dog miraculously survived the fall.
