Neighbours in the town of Przemyśl, Poland, grew concerned about a dog in their building who barked endlessly but was never seen outside.

Because the dog was barking so much and was never seen outside, the neighbours suspected that the dog's owner had left the dog alone in the apartment and never returned.

A local animal welfare group called Nadzieja (Hope in English) heard about the complaints and tried to make contact with the dog's owner. But to no avail.

Rescue mission

Local animal welfare group Nadzieja (which means Hope in English) took the reports seriously and tried to contact the owner, but their efforts failed. It soon became clear the dog had been left alone in the apartment without food or water, desperately barking for help.

Hope appealed to the police, but officers were hesitant to act without a warrant. Undeterred, the charity shared a heartbreaking photo of the dog crying at the window on social media. The post sparked outrage, eventually catching the attention of the town’s mayor. With his intervention, Hope was finally given the go-ahead to enter the flat. Inside, they found the emaciated dog, later named Julek.

Julek's fight for life

The flat was filthy, and Julek was severely malnourished. Vets feared he wouldn’t survive, as tests revealed kidney and heart failure along with a tumour. His owner now faces animal cruelty charges.

Despite the odds, Julek is responding to treatment, gaining weight, and enjoying life again. Rescuers say he is becoming a new dog each day, and they remain hopeful he will soon find the loving home he deserves.
