Jon Watkins, who saw the shocking act, immediately alerted others, prompting a rescue operation.
Local residents spent over two hours chasing the terrified German Shepherd dogs, herding them to safety despite the freezing temperatures.
Neglected and discarded
Social media posts later revealed the dogs were visibly neglected, with matted fur and signs of abuse, and some locals feared they had been beaten.
The dogs, named Lois and Clark by their rescuers, were taken in by Hope Rescue, who described their condition as “extremely underweight, with matted fur and caked-on mud.” Despite their ordeal, they showed signs of being affectionate.
Urgent appeal for information
Hope Rescue expressed gratitude for the public’s quick response: "After a good night’s sleep and a small meal, we’ll begin gently cleaning them up.”
Although not contracted by Caerphilly County Borough Council, Hope Rescue stepped in after the council’s pound kennels were closed.
The rescue is now appealing for any information about the van or the circumstances of the dogs’ abandonment. Screenshots of the suspected vehicle have been shared online.
