Kaley shared on Instagram that Shirley was rehomed due to escalating conflicts with her fiancé Tom Pelphrey’s German Shepherd, Blue.
Shirley had been with the actress since the pup was six weeks old.
Severe fights between dogs
Kaley described the fights between the dogs as severe, stating that Shirley had become “determined to kill” Blue, making the situation increasingly unsafe.
Ultimately, Shirley was placed in the care of Cuoco’s trusted pet handler, Tony, and his wife, Angie.
There, she reportedly lived a happy and loving life until her recent passing at nearly 14 years old from aggressive bone cancer.
Criticism on social media
However, Kaley’s explanation drew backlash on social media. Critics questioned her decision, suggesting she prioritised her relationship over her dog.
Comments ranged from accusations of treating Shirley as disposable to suggestions that she should have pursued training or alternative solutions to avoid having to rehome the dog.
Supporters of Cuoco acknowledged the difficulty of balancing personal safety with pet welfare.
