Lucy is the proud owner of a West Highland Terrier, Narla, who she describes as a constant source of comfort through life’s challenges.
This comes as a survey of 2,000 pet owners reveals the vital role cats and dogs play in improving mental and physical wellbeing.
Pets help us cope
The research, commissioned by pet care company Purina, found that pets help their owners cope with illness, workplace stress, and personal conflicts.
Many cited moments of physical affection, such as snuggling or being greeted at the door, as significant mood lifters.
Lucy praised Narla for her unwavering companionship, saying, “Being able to come home to someone so happy to see you after a long day is a great feeling. She’s been the best thing ever for me.”
Reducing loneliness
The survey showed that 73% of owners believe their pets can sense their emotions, while 52% said pets ease stress and 47% credited them with reducing loneliness. Over half (54%) see time with their pets as therapeutic.
Purina’s campaign also highlights partnerships with charities supporting vulnerable people through pet companionship, reinforcing the transformative bond between humans and animals.
Many owners described their pets as confidants, with 43% saying their lives are vastly improved by their furry friends.
