Beautiful Australian Shepherd Snoetje was brought in to Piet's boarding kennels with a Labrador puppy, for what was meant to be a week-long stay.
But 7 days turned in to 7 months, and the owner seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth.
While Piet did everything he could to keep Snoetje happy, the poor pup was clearly bewildered and confused, wondering why her owner never came back to claim her.
An unpaid bill and a lonely dog
The bill for Snoetje's care rose week after week, eventually reaching a whopping 2,000 euros.
Piet has had dogs abandoned at the kennels in the past, and every time it happens, it affects him emotionally.
The dogs don't understand why they've been left, and placing the dogs in new homes can be complicated, explains Dibevo, the trade organisation that regulates boarding kennels in the Netherlands.
From neglect to new beginnings
Snoetje's story was shared nationwide, and she received lots of offers of help. A family was chosen for her, and she left Piet's care to join them.
It seems she had bonded closely with the boarding kennel owner during her 7 month stay, and it took her a while to adjust to the changes. Thankfully, her new guardians are devoted and experienced, and have given her the time she needs to settle and adapt to her new home.
