Having endured the most appalling conditions for almost a decade, this little dog will finally be able to experience real happiness in a family of his own.

He may have been named Happy, but this couldn't have been further from the truth for this poor little Yorkshire Terrier.

He was seized in mid-March by rescue organisation Rescapes de L'Enfer, after being discovered in the most distressing situation imaginable.

Daily abuse

Happy spent 10 years of his life locked in dirty, dark room. He was allowed outside twice a day when his owner remembered, but with endless hours stretching in between, the poor pup would often have accidents indoors.

He was cruelly punished when this happened, enduring mistreatment on a daily basis.

When Happy was found he had lost all his front teeth, though his owner claimed this was not from being hit. Instead, he explained that Happy lost his teeth by chewing the flooring. The little dog was found infested with fleas and with a very matted coat, suggesting he had received no real medical treatment in all these years.

Fortunately Rescapes de L'Enfer took custody of Happy, with the help of the local protection department. He was immediately groomed and seen by a vet, making up for all the lost years of care and attention.

The happiest boy

Despite everything he has been through, Happy really does have the most adorable character. He's social with dogs and enjoys spending time around people.

Happy is now up for adoption, so hopefully he'll soon be enjoying life in a loving family of his own.
