With demand skyrocketing by over 300%, StreetVet has been instrumental in providing essential veterinary care to people and their pets experiencing homelessness across Britain.
Homelessness and the cost of living crisis
The support from Purina includes not only substantial funding, with StreetVet winning over £70,000 in the Purina Better with Pets prize in both 2021 and 2023, but also the provision of therapeutic and maintenance pet food free of charge. This aid comes at a crucial time as economic challenges and the rising cost of living exacerbate the struggles faced by vulnerable populations.
Jade Statt, co-founder of StreetVet, emphasises the profound impact of the support received, highlighting how many homeless individuals cherish their pets:
Harriet Morley, Purina’s Specialist Channel Director for the Northern Region, expressed admiration for StreetVet's work, especially considering the fact that homelessness in the UK rose by 14% last year.
Purina's Better with Pets Prize helps StreetVet initiatives
Purina's Better with Pets prize, which aims to foster positive change through the pet-human bond, has played a pivotal role in supporting StreetVet's initiatives. By awarding them over £70,000 in funding, Purina has helped StreetVet establish the Accredited Hostel Scheme, enabling more hostels to become pet-friendly.
Jade also praises the mentoring and networking opportunities provided by the Better with Pets programme, which have facilitated StreetVet's growth and sparked international interest in similar initiatives. The programme not only addresses short-term needs but also aims to bring about lasting change for the benefit of all.
