Neighbours in California have found an inventive way of letting their dogs play, after they noticed the pair had started waiting for each other in the garden.

When Whitney Tipton shared a video of her Golden Retriever Trapper and his best friend Fritz, she had no idea it would be viewed by people around the world.

Now the clip has been seen over 3 million times, with hundreds commenting on the invention the neighbours have put in place so their dogs can play happily together.

The best of friends

It all began when Whitney brought Trapper home as a puppy, at the same time her neighbours brought home their Shepherd mix Fritz.

Friendship blossomed between the neighbours, as they commiserated over the challenges of puppyhood. Over time, the dogs grew closer. They formed an adorable bond, always waiting for each other to play in the garden.

"The perfect odd couple" quickly became inseparable, despite their very different personalities.

An ingenious creation

Fritz's owner jokingly suggested installing a doggy door in the garden fence, but it wasn't until a chance meeting with a local carpenter, that the dream turned into reality.

A trap door was installed, allowing the dogs to move between one garden to the other.

The neighbours decided to install latches on either side, which means that they both have to agree on when to open the door. And as soon as the gate opens, the dogs couldn't be happier!
