In a heart-wrenching case that has gripped Sant Antoni, local police have intervened yet again to rescue a dog allegedly abused by its owners.

Lía, a Pitbull mix, has allegedly been subjected to prolonged abuse by her owners, leading to a complaint lodged by a concerned neighbour with the Spanish Civil Guard for ongoing animal mistreatment.

Lia’s sad story

A year ago, Lía was first rescued from her owners following reports of abuse, but a recent court decision had her returned to the same conditions.

Images circulated by the Foundation Against Animal Abuse revealed the dog tethered and muzzled on a terrace, sparking renewed public outrage.

Despite the owner obtaining a license for Potentially Dangerous Dogs in February 2023, subsequent inspections failed to identify abuse until the most recent one. The city council stated that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated under the new animal welfare law.

Seeking a resolution

However, Sos Salvando Vidas España, an animal rescue organisation, has highlighted the legal system’s inherent flaws, where animals often endure prolonged stays in shelters or confined spaces during legal proceedings. They pleaded for a compassionate resolution for Lía, emphasising the urgent need for a loving environment.

Here's a heartbreaking video of the Lia’s terrible living conditions:

As the city council collaborates with veterinary officials to assess Lía’s current state, advocates remain vigilant, fearing a repeat of the tragic cycle that saw Lía transition from an abused terrace to the confines of a shelter cage and then back again.

The public outcry on social media reflects a growing demand for justice and improved animal welfare measures, not just in Spain but worldwide.
