A Cocker Spaniel found himself in a life-threatening situation when he devoured a seemingly harmless vegetable, prompting a vet to issue a warning to owners.

The Cocker Spaniel, named Roman, may have enjoyed his impromptu snack, but it led to a frantic dash to a veterinary clinic in Hull.

An x-ray revealed that the greedy pup had devoured a corn on the cob at the family BBQ, which posed a serious blockage risk. Emergency surgery became the only option.

Emergency surgery

Although corn itself is not toxic to dogs, it can cause obstructions in their digestive system, potentially leading to fatal consequences. It may impede the flow of solids and fluids in the stomach, with dire outcomes.

Roman's vet is now urging dog owners to maintain vigilant supervision around kitchens, barbecues, picnics, and any potential sources of consumable waste.

After his harrowing ordeal, Roman returned to the vet for check-ups and made a complete recovery.

Dangers of corn on the cob

Corn on the cob can trigger choking or severe blockages in dogs' gastric tracts, potentially resulting in tissue damage and compromised blood supply. Swift action, as Roman's owners took, significantly improves a dog's chances of recovery.

They had to enforce strict rest during his recovery, but now he is in perfect health.

Dog owners must exercise utmost caution when feeding their dogs, both at home and during walks. If you suspect your dog has ingested something harmful, contact your vet immediately. A quick response can save your pet's life.
