When the men spotted the distraught dog desperately trying to get out of the canal, they knew they had to do whatever they could to help.

The students, Jack Spencer Furmston and Ben Camphor were walking down the street when they suddenly spotted the awful scene ahead of them.

Rescue mission

Dog owner, Batu Akyol, was frantically trying to grab his dog's lead, which had fallen into the canal. But the poor pup had fallen too far into Manchester's Ancoats Canal to reach it.

Jack and Ben knew they had to do something. So the men hatched a rather unusual rescue mission. Ben, the tallest of the group, volunteered to dangle himself head-first over the canal wall while Jack and some passersby held on to his legs.

Success!

As Ben lowered himself down, he grabbed hold of the dog's collar and supported the pup's body with his other hand, and the men pulled the pair back up over the wall to safety.

Once the dog was back on dry land, spectators cheered the group's triumphant efforts.

The unusual rescue mission was caught on camera and later shared on social media. Andy Burham, The Mayor of Greater Manchester, praised the men's efforts with some clapping hands emojis, while others commented,

"Not all heroes wear capes. Well done, lads."
