A Golden Retriever abandoned at a supermarket car park won't stop hugging the person who rescued him.

Things have never really gone Clarence's way. The Golden Retriever spent his early years living in a backyard because his people didn't want him in the house.

So why bother getting a dog then? Just asking! Some people have no idea how these special animals should be treated.

It gets worse

Then one day Clarence's so-called owners drove him to the car park of a Walmart store near Atlanta, Georgia. Clarence probably thought things were looking up. Was this treat time? New toy time? A quick stop to pick up supplies for a nice long walk?

No. That's not what was happening. Instead, Clarence's people pushed him out of the car and speeded away.

Clarence was all alone. And he had no idea why. How can one dog have such bad luck with humans?

Then the dog catcher got his paws on Clarence, and the poor pooch was locked in a cage. The animal control service contacted Clarence's owners, who said they didn't want him back.

With no one willing to set up for him, Clarence went on puppy death row. And no dog deserves that.

Sweet Clarence was weeks away from euthanasia. And then his luck FINALLY changed.

Cat Suzuki, founder of Hounds In Pounds, heard about Clarence's tragic story and decided this was one dog that deserved a break. Hounds In Pounds is a specialist rescue service that rehomes dogs scheduled for the 'long-sleep.'

On her way to collect Clarence, Cat expected to meet a pup broken by life. Instead, she was shocked by how much love and hope Clarence still had.

This dog never lost hope

Clarence greeted Cat with a big hug, and he pretty much hasn't let go since. It's like he knows she's his saviour.

"He's so sweet and gentle. Clarence is an angel — literally," said Cat. "He wants to be by your side all the time. He's a love mush."

Clarence settled into life at the Hounds in Pounds rescue centre, and Cat has already started searching for his forever home. Given Clarence's loving personality - and the fact that he's due a bit more good luck -  Cat is confident that he'll get his happy ending very soon.
