It's late at night. You are tired and just want to get into bed. So, the last thing you need is for your cat to start acting weirdly.
But for a cat owner in the small town of Kleve, on the German-Dutch border, his evening quickly took an unexpected turn thanks to his feline friend.
Guard cat
The man was on his way to bed when he noticed that his cat was acting rather peculiarly. It was usual for the cat to accompany him to bed in the evening, but tonight the cat was obsessed with the fridge, hissing at it as if something had frightened the poor puss.
Despite the man’s best efforts to settle his feline friend, the cat wouldn't take its eyes off the fridge and was clearly agitated. The man figures that the cat has probably discovered a dead mouse behind the fridge, but he decides to pull out the fridge to see for himself.
Unwelcome intruder
And he wasn't wrong. There was something behind the fridge, but it wasn't a dead mouse. It was an orange snake that was very much alive.
Not surprisingly, the man was shocked at his discovery and immediately called the emergency services. They arrived soon afterwards and were able to contain the snake before taking it to a local animal rescue centre.
Fortunately, the snake turned out to be a North American Corn Snake, a non-poisonous constrictor that isn't a threat to cats or humans. Still not something you want to find behind your fridge in the middle of the night!
While it's not known how the snake got in, we suspect that the man will take his furry cat alarm more seriously next time.
