Charlene Latham, of Newark and an unnamed man appeared before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on November 23rd this year.
Latham is accused of attempting to drown her 10-year-old Belgian Shepherd, Bella, by tying a rock to the dog’s lead and throwing her into the river.
Latham pleaded guilty to the charge and will re-appear in March along with the man in his 30s, who denies any involvement.
Brave rescue
Bella was rescued only after being spotted by a passerby. On 6 January, the dog was seen struggling for breath in the freezing cold river Trent.
The rescuer managed to wade into the water and carry the dog onto dry ground. Attached to its collar was a bin bag which contained a large boulder.
Police officers rushed Bella to a nearby vet’s practice.
Police intervention
Chief Superintendent Rob Griffin, of Nottinghamshire Police, told The Metro, “This was a highly emotive incident that was understandably very shocking to the public.
“Thankfully Bella is reported to be doing well and is in very good hands.
“Animal cruelty is totally unacceptable and we will always support our colleagues in the RSPCA in whatever we can in their investigations.”
The police force will often willingly assist charities in rescuing and rehoming animals.
If found guilty, Latham could face up to five years in prison under new Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill guidelines.
