If you thought 2024 was a big year for the UK’s beloved dogs, hold onto your leads because 2025 is already shaping up to be even bigger.

From the rise (and fall) of certain breeds to training triumphs and the pop culture names set to take over the dog parks, we’ve got the inside scoop.

And who better to dig up these insights than Zigzag, the UK’s number one puppy training app, which welcomed almost a quarter of a million new users in 2024 alone? From essential life skills that prevent behavioural issues to the peace of mind of 24/7 coaching support, it guides new pet parents through the challenges of puppyhood and beyond.

So, what did last year tell us about what’s ahead? Let’s take a look at the biggest puppy trends for 2025.

What’s shaping puppy names in 2025?

Naming your puppy is a momentous decision, and in 2024, Zigzag users shared over 10,000 unique names. Some firm favourites remained, while pop culture and sporting events left their mark. While classic names like Bella, Milo, and Teddy remained popular last year, Barney and Rocky made a surprise entrance. And for Marvel fans, Loki finally broke into the top 20!

Here’s what Zigzag predicts for 2025:

  • Film & TV: with Superman: Legacy soaring onto screens in 2025, will we see an influx of Clarks and Kents? The release of Wicked will undoubtedly lead to a wave of Elphabas and Glindas, while the film comeback of Snow White could see pups named Dopey and Bashful.
  • Sports: following the Euros and the Lionesses’ continued success, expect names like Leah (Williamson) and Russo (Alessia) to trend among footie-loving pet parents.
  • Music: with Lana Del Rey and Sam Fender set for massive tours this year, their names could soon be called across dog parks. And dare we say it? The return of Oasis could mean Bonehead (yes, really), Noel, and Liam joining the canine name pool.

Which breeds will dominate in 2025?

Dog breeds rise and fall in popularity, and 2024 was no exception. With over 300 breeds registered on Zigzag’s app, certain pups stole the spotlight, revealing some surprising shifts:

  • On the rise: Goldendoodles, Pugs, and German Shepherds made a strong comeback toward the end of 2024
  • Losing favour: Maltipoos saw a dip in registrations, suggesting their reign may be slipping in 2025, making way for new favourites
  • Rare and unique: Zigzag saw over 60 unusual breeds join their platform, proving that UK dog lovers are embracing diversity more than ever, from international rarities like the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen to dogs with names that sound more like Pokémon (yes, we're talking about you, Peekapoos)!

Training is at the heart of every great dog-owner relationship, and last year, Zigzag saw pet parents excel in several key lessons. The most completed training modules were all about basic obedience and socialisation, showing that owners are committed to raising well-mannered pups. However, some challenges proved trickier. Things like lead walking, recall, and dealing with distractions tested many dog owners. But as any experienced dog parent will tell you, patience and persistence are key. And with Zigzag’s expert-led lessons and personalised support, 2025 is the year to conquer those training hurdles!

After all, as the experts at Zigzag say, “Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was the perfect puppy!”

As we head further into 2025, one thing’s for sure: puppy parents are more engaged, informed, and eager than ever to set their furry friends up for success. So, here’s to a year filled with adventure, learning, and lots of wagging tails!
