"He's your problem!": Man drops dog's lead in rescue centre and flees

By Lina Rayan

"He's your problem now!" Four chilling words that marked the start of a shocking incident, sparking an unprecedented wave of anger online.

A shocking abandonment

On Thursday, 30th April 2026, while most people were looking forward to a long bank holiday weekend, the situation at the Cologne-Dellbrück rescue centre in Germany took an unexpected turn. A scene unfolded that day which left the entire team deeply shaken.

A large man suddenly walked into the office with his partner, their dog on a lead. Without the slightest hint of remorse or emotion, the owner suddenly dropped the lead on the floor. Before the pair turned to leave, the man stated coldly: "He's your problem now!"

The shelter staff reacted instinctively. They grabbed the dog's lead and rushed outside after the couple, with the dog in tow. A heated argument broke out in the car park.

The volunteers tried to make the man understand that you can't just dispose of a living being like a piece of rubbish. Hoping he might see sense, they placed the lead back in his hand.

But the man then showed his true colours: once again, he deliberately dropped the lead! He clearly wanted to be rid of the animal. The dog, utterly bewildered, was suddenly left to wander, unprotected and loose, in the busy car park.

A cold goodbye and public outrage

While the alerted staff hurriedly tried to catch the frightened animal and bring him to safety, the couple got into their car, unfazed. The car started – but stopped briefly a few metres down the road.

Anyone hoping that a sense of shame had finally kicked in was sorely mistaken! The door opened only for them to throw out the dog's remaining belongings. After that, the car disappeared for good.

Left behind were a distressed dog named Poppa and a speechless shelter team. Although the staff later pointed out that they were ultimately relieved the dog hadn't been tied to a tree somewhere, they stated unequivocally: "This act was simply despicable."

The rescue centre is now looking for answers. The man is believed to be from Leverkusen-Opladen. Does anyone know this couple or the dog, Poppa? The shelter still has a lot to uncover.

The incredible incident, which the rescue centre shared on Facebook on 2nd May 2026, immediately gained significant traction. In just 24 hours, the post went viral, gathering thousands of reactions.

The online community is seething with anger.

Many users are counting on karma: "I'm counting on karma. I hope the same thing happens to him... just drop him off in front of a nursing home and goodbye." Nevertheless, most are just relieved that poor Poppa is now safe.
