Rule change affecting dog owners at hundreds of beaches comes into force in UK

By Greta Inglis•

Dog owners can enjoy seaside walks again as seasonal bans expire, allowing pets back onto more than 600 beaches throughout the UK.

Restrictions have banned dogs on hundreds of beaches across the UK since May this year, with owners facing penalties of up to £1,000 for breaching the rules.

The ban comes into force to keep beaches safe and clean at the busiest time of year, during which families with children may be visiting.

A change in the law

Seasonal restrictions usually run until the end of September, requiring owners to avoid beaches between the hours of 10am to 6pm or to keep their dog on lead at all times.

As of the 1st of October the regulations change, meaning dogs and their families can visit 600 UK beaches at any time of day.

Taking your dog to the beach

Beaches offer the perfect playground for dogs of all ages, with plenty of space to run and explore.

"The shoreline, sand and cool water all offer a mix of exercise and sensory stimulation, giving dogs the chance to stretch their legs and enjoy a sense of freedom that’s different from a normal walk."  explained Group Director of Animal Welfare David Martin.

“Keep an eye out for common coastal hazards on the beach, such as jellyfish and hidden debris. If your dog gets into difficulty whilst in the water, never enter the water yourself - instead, contact the emergency services or coastguard for help. Taking a few simple precautions can help keep you and your dog safe whilst enjoying a day at the beach" he advised.
