"I'm building the life I want": teacher quits to become a dog walker

By Elise Petter•

Tired of her daily routine, a 27-year-old teacher gave it all up to become a dog sitter. It was a bold move that has completely transformed her life.

Kaitlyn Ballard had been teaching Year 6 pupils for five years. But despite the reassuring stability of her career, she no longer felt fulfilled in her day-to-day life. In search of more meaning and a better quality of life, she felt a growing need to take on a completely different challenge.

The only obstacle in her way was the fear of losing her financial security. To test the waters without taking any unnecessary risks, Kaitlyn decided to sign up to a pet-sitting and dog-walking website in her spare time.

An incredible financial success

Her new venture showed promise quickly. By offering her services at affordable rates, Kaitlyn managed to bring in over £26,000 in extra income while keeping her full-time teaching job. Encouraged by this success and keen to offer a top-quality service, she trained in pet first aid and adjusted her rates.

When she relocated, she finally took the plunge to make this passion her full-time job. Today, with nearly thirty regular clients, her walking services bring in an average of £3,000 to £3,400 a month, for just 15 to 20 hours of work a week.

More freedom and a fulfilling routine

This new pace of life allows her to spend far more time with her own family and her two dogs, while enjoying precious flexibility. Even though looking after pooches with different temperaments requires constant vigilance, she does not regret her career change at all.

She now also offers online training to help other animal lovers become self-employed. It is a wonderful success story that proves you really can combine a passion for dogs with professional freedom!
