The film world is in mourning. On Sunday, 28th December 2025, the Brigitte Bardot Foundation announced the passing of the legendary actress and activist.

Brigitte Bardot, an icon of the 1950s and 1960s, has passed away at the age of 91. She leaves behind an immense legacy, not only in the arts but also in the fight for animal rights.

A true symbol of French cinema and a sex symbol, Brigitte Bardot was, above all for animal lovers, a voice for the voiceless.

After ending her film career in the 1970s, she dedicated herself entirely to defending animal rights, becoming one of the world's most renowned animal rights activists.

Despite retiring from the screen at just 39, Brigitte Bardot starred in 45 films and recorded over 80 songs. She left a lasting mark on cinema history with films such as "Et Dieu créa la femme" (And God Created Woman), "La Vérité" (The Truth), and "Le Mépris" (Contempt).

A passion for animals

Emmanuel Macron, among others, paid tribute to the late actress and singer, highlighting on social media her "universal influence" and her "generous and unwavering passion for animals". He noted that Brigitte Bardot was not only a cultural icon but also a symbol of compassion and the fight for the dignified treatment of animals.

The Brigitte Bardot Foundation, which she established, has been fighting for years against animal cruelty, hunting, fur farming, and the industrial exploitation of animals. Thanks to her determination, many previously overlooked issues are now at the forefront of public debate, both in France and abroad.

Health concerns

In recent months, Brigitte Bardot's health had been a cause for concern. Last November, she was hospitalised in Toulon, France, where she underwent surgery.

Earlier in the year, she had been admitted to hospital for respiratory failure. Despite her health issues, she remained devoted to the animal cause and the work of her foundation.
