A tradition rooted in companionship

James revealed that the Prince and Princess of Wales previously shared their lives with Lupo, a Cocker Spaniel bred by him, before welcoming Orla, another dog from his line. He explained that dogs bring a rare sense of equality, noting that they respond to everyone in the same way, regardless of status or title.

This affection for dogs stretches back generations, from Queen Elizabeth II’s famous Corgis to earlier monarchs who also kept dogs close.

Responsibility and emotional connection

James stressed that taking on a dog is never a casual decision and requires careful planning and long-term commitment. In his 2024 memoir Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, he described dogs as selfless companions who become part of their owners.

He added that losing a dog can feel like losing a piece of oneself, underlining just how deep the bond can be.
