Men vs women: Why your cat changes its tune

A cat's meow can change depending on whether they're talking to a man or a woman. Find out why the volume and tone aren't always the same.

If you're lucky enough to live with a cat, this thought may have crossed your mind: why does my cat meow so loudly?

A new study, reported by Zmescience, has delved into this very question. It suggests that our feline friends tend to meow much more loudly when trying to communicate with men.

And the reason for this? According to the study, it's because men find it harder to interpret what cats are trying to say.

A different approach to communication

Scientists recorded the vocalisations of 31 cats to analyse their behaviour. They soon discovered that the meows would differ depending on the gender of the person they were directed at.

The study found that women tend to interact more verbally with their pets. They are also better at interpreting the subtle nuances of feline vocalisations.

They are also more likely to use "cat-directed speech", which involves talking in a high-pitched and melodious tone.

Making themselves heard

Men, on the other hand, tend to be less responsive. This means cats have to meow more loudly to get their attention.
