For five years, Korra lived with a family that seemed to be hers forever. Unfortunately, this female Pitbull suffers from food allergies that her owners couldn't manage. Unable to cope, they eventually took her to the rescue centre, bringing an end to the life they shared with her.
When Korra arrived at Lancaster Animal Care Center in the United States, she was terrified. Still wearing her little pyjamas, she sat in her kennel with her eyes fixed on the gate, waiting for her family to come back for her.
"From day one, she's been very fearful", says Evelyn Garces, a volunteer at the rescue centre, speaking to The Dodo. "She stayed at the back of her kennel, barking nervously with wide eyes. When she finally came closer, she started shaking. It was heartbreaking."
Korra, a fragile dog but full of potential
When they removed her pyjamas, the volunteers found that Korra was thin and clearly malnourished. They cleaned her up, put her on a suitable diet and promised to help her regain her confidence. Evelyn describes the dog as "a work in progress", but full of intelligence and potential. For her, the goal is clear: to find her a home where she can finally flourish.
According to the volunteer, Korra would be more comfortable in a calm and patient environment, where she'd have time and space to open up gradually. A family prepared to respect her strict dietary requirements will be essential to prevent any relapse.
At risk of being put down, Korra doesn't have much time left
Sadly, Korra's fearfulness now puts her in great danger. Without a quick adoption or rescue by an organisation, she faces being put to sleep. Yet her carers are convinced that in a loving and stable home, this frightened dog could one day become the happy and confident dog she's never had the chance to be.
"I know she has the potential to become that dog full of energy and life", Evelyn shares hopefully.
We're keeping our fingers crossed that fate will be kind to Korra and give her a well-deserved second chance.
