At the beginning of October, workers from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation in the United States were called out to clear a fallen tree from the road.

That day, they didn't expect to make such an unusual discovery.

They spotted four tiny furry heads hidden amongst the leaves.

Abandoned kittens

They were little kittens in the middle of a bramble bush, unable to free themselves from the thorny branches. Their mother was nowhere to be found and the kittens seemed to be "managing" without her. The workers set about cutting the branches around the kittens to free them. They were extremely careful not to injure them.

After managing to free the kittens from the branches safely, the workers called the animal control officers for help. The rescuers were able to take the little balls of fluff into their care.

A brighter future

Today, the cats are safe at the North Kingstown animal shelter, where they'll stay until they're ready to be adopted for life.

The workers were relieved to learn that all the kittens are in good health, and they were delighted to have been able to help with their rescue.
