The morning had started like any other at the Saving Sage Animal Rescue Foundation in Florida, USA. But as staff arrived, they noticed a carrier sitting by the door, with no one around.
Inside, a tabby cat looked out at them through the mesh, clearly bewildered. Tucked in beside him was a handwritten note. As they read it, their hearts broke. "I'm sorry... It's not safe for him at my house. He doesn't deserve to be hurt. Please help him."
A shelter already at capacity
At the time, the rescue was completely full. Every kennel was occupied, and all their foster families were at capacity. Taking in another animal was a huge challenge, but they couldn't possibly turn him away.
The volunteers brought the cat inside, their thoughts with the person who had written those words. They sensed this was more than just an abandonment; it was an act of concern, perhaps even desperation. "He is safe. We can tell he was loved," they later shared on social media, in a message to his former owner.
A new start for Georgie
After a reassuring vet check, the cat was given a new name: Georgie. Settled into a kennel with cosy blankets, he was finally able to rest. That evening, the team breathed a sigh of relief as Georgie relaxed, ate his food, and fell asleep. The note, however, remained on everyone's mind.
A short time later, Georgie was transferred to Ten Lives Club, a rescue specialising in cat adoption. And happily, he didn't have to wait long. A woman came to meet another cat… and ended up going home with Georgie. "Sweet Georgie went home today!" the organisation announced.
"His new mum came in for another cat and just fell in love with him."
