Seconds from being crushed: man saves tiny kittens dumped in a cardboard box

An employee made a heartbreaking discovery when he heard faint meows coming from a pile of cardboard.

The story began on 13th February at a waste management facility in Abbotsford, Canada. As an employee was loading cardboard into a compactor, he heard some unusual sounds.

As he got closer, he realised it wasn't just a noise... it was the sound of tiny cries.

A discovery seconds from disaster

Searching through the cardboard, the man discovered two tiny kittens hidden in the very pile he was about to crush. Without a moment's hesitation, he scooped them up and took them straight to the BC SPCA.

Later that day, he went back and found a third kitten, which he also handed over to the animal welfare team. But the story doesn't end there.

A life-saving effort

Three days later, on 16th February, the same employee made another discovery in the same spot: two more kittens, also hidden under the cardboard.

As it was a public holiday in Canada, the centre was closed. The man decided to take them home for the night to keep them safe, before handing them over to the BC SPCA team the next day.

Taken in by foster families, the five kittens were very young and in poor health. They were suffering from respiratory infections, with significant discharge from their eyes. They were bottle-fed and treated with antibiotics, and gradually recovered. Today, they are doing brilliantly.

Now sociable and playful, the kittens are making the most of their well-deserved second chance in their foster homes. Each one is already developing its own little personality: one is curious, another is very cuddly, while a third is known for its strong voice.

They will soon be ready for adoption, once they have reached the required weight.
