The story, shared on Reddit on 4th March, quickly moved thousands of users. Within hours, the post had gathered over 24,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments from people who were heartbroken by the kitten's fate.
At around six months old, the little feline was supposed to be starting a promising new life... until everything fell apart.
A seemingly perfect adoption
According to the person who arranged the adoption, it seemed like the perfect setup for the kitten to have a stable life. The adopters had owned cats before, had all the necessary equipment, and were even considering getting another companion to expand their family. They had even travelled a long way to pick up the little animal.
But two months later, an unexpected phone call turned everything upside down. The adopters asked to return the cat, claiming he ultimately didn't fit in with their lifestyle.
A difficult return to cope with
Without hesitation, the person who had arranged the adoption agreed to take him back, preferring this to the risk of him being abandoned or placed in an uncertain situation. But it's still a difficult situation.
The kitten is no longer a tiny baby, which makes it harder for him to be adopted again. Many families look for very young kittens, as they are considered easier to integrate. Worn out by the repeated efforts to find serious adopters, his rescuer also admits to feeling exhausted by the often long and uncertain process.
A wave of online support
The story prompted an immediate reaction online. Many users expressed their confusion, but also their support.
Some pointed out that, despite everything, his return was a blessing in disguise: it's better for him to be in a safe environment than to risk being abandoned in poor conditions. Others simply hoped that someone would soon fall for the young black cat's charms. Based in Hungary, the person currently caring for him explained that the distance would make any help complicated. However, the messages of support have been a great comfort.
