Here's an astonishing story shared by a 41-year-old woman on the community website Reddit. She explains that she's been in a relationship with a 46-year-old man for several years. However, last year, the couple decided to take a break for about six months.
During this time, the woman adopted a cat from a colleague who had to move to another US state.
"Always choose the animal"
She later resumed her relationship but discovered that her partner "hates" the new family member.
As he confided to his girlfriend, "he feels like the colleague only gave her the cat to try to have a relationship with her".
"He said he didn't even want to feed the cat when I was away because it reminded him of this other bloke", the woman wrote.
As she tells Reddit users, she's already made it clear to her boyfriend that she would "never get rid of the cat to make him feel comfortable".
Reddit users warned the woman that her partner's behaviour was cause for concern: "When there's an ultimatum involving animals, always choose the animal."
A little later, the woman announced her permanent separation from her partner.
