Rosie, a medium-sized dog with brown fur, has recently become a social media sensation. For several days, she relentlessly dug away at her garden, never seeming to tire. Her owner, Sophie Molkenthin, filmed this rather intriguing behaviour and shared it on TikTok.
In the viral video, we can see Rosie digging with unwavering determination. Through sheer perseverance, she eventually creates an impressive hole. Internet users, just like her owner, were curious to know what could possibly motivate such persistence. The answer ended up surprising everyone.
A surprising and hilarious plan
Once her work was complete, Rosie didn't hesitate to push Pancho, her adopted 'brother' from the rescue centre, straight into the hole she'd just dug! The scene, which might seem brutal at first glance, was actually purely playful. Sophie was keen to clarify in the caption: "I promise she's just playing, even though it might look a bit aggressive."
The humorous twist won over internet users. The video has already garnered more than 6.1 million views and nearly 765,000 likes. Many saw it as a lovely illustration of the sometimes mischievous bond between two dogs living under the same roof.
Why do dogs dig?
While Rosie's case brings a smile, digging is perfectly natural behaviour for dogs. According to the American Kennel Club, cited by Newsweek, it's an inheritance from their wolf ancestors. Several reasons can explain this habit:
- Hunting instinct: some dogs dig to unearth rodents or other small prey.
- Seeking coolness: in hot weather, a cavity in the ground can become a more comfortable refuge.
- The need to hide treasures: toys, bones or treats may be buried for safekeeping.
- Escape: some dogs try to get under a fence to explore, find a companion or simply escape loneliness.
- Play and relaxation: for many, digging is mainly a pastime that keeps them busy, entertained and reduces anxiety.
In Rosie's case, the objective seemed clear: to transform her impressive hole into a playground for her and Pancho. A very personal way of showing that in this duo, she's the one calling the shots.
