Eight years ago, staff at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Michigan were baffled after arriving to find a dog they didn’t know curled up on their sofa.

The mystery intruder had somehow slipped through the automatic doors and made himself at home among the residents.

It didn’t take long for the local sheriff to discover that the black dog had escaped from the animal shelter across the street.

One of the administrators adopted the dog, naming him Scout. From that moment, the once-wandering pup became part of the community. Scout roams the halls, greets visitors and even slips into residents’ rooms for treats.

Mascot and unofficial security guard

His talents extend to opening doors and climbing fences, which explained how he had repeatedly escaped the shelter in the first place.

Now proudly considered the facility’s mascot and unofficial security guard, Scout has been brightening the lives of residents, staff and visitors for nearly a decade. The nursing home says simply, “This is his home. He chose us.”
