Driving through a residential neighbourhood days before halloween, the volunteers couldn't believe their eyes.
Hunched and defeated, the sad pup had lost all hope.
Just in time
"He was very scared and clearly had some pain. He is not using his back end very well, and he has bite wounds all over his legs and neck", Stray Rescue of St. Louis, explained, as they shared the post to Facebook.
"You are safe, you big sweet angel", wrote one of the team.
And Guillermo de la Cruz, as he was later named, seemed to know that to be true. The second he jumped into the car, he completely relaxed - relieved and delighted to have been rescued.
The happiest of endings
Guillermo was rushed back to the centre, where he received round the clock care for his wounds. Within no time at all, he was thriving!
"This choco chonk of a baby doll boy has permanent puppy eyes and a record-breaking-sized noggin!”, wrote SRSL in an update online.
And shortly after, he landed himself the perfect forever home, alongside three furry siblings and human parents who are completely in love with their new companion.
