The extraordinary incident occurred around 5:30 am at a cardamom plantation near Myladumpara in Kattappana, southwest India.
It appeared that the dog had been chased by the tiger when both animals accidentally fell into a pit used for waste disposal.
Dog and tiger in pit
Owner Sunny, hearing the frantic barking, rushed to the pit and was stunned to see his dog unharmed and sharing the space with the big cat. He immediately alerted the forest department.
Officials from the Periyar Tiger Reserve arrived swiftly and tranquilised the tiger before lifting it from the pit and transporting it to the reserve for medical care.
Safely rescued
Miraculously, the dog was also safely rescued. Authorities confirmed that the tiger, which had strayed into the residential area, would be released back into the wild once it had fully recovered.
The dog’s bravery and calm in the face of danger have left many people stunned, with locals hailing it as the “bravest boy” of the day. We couldn't agree more!
