If you've ever noticed your dog stretching out to greet you, you may think this is because they're waking up after a long nap.
But it turns out the reason behind the behaviour isn't quite what it seems. It's actually something dog owners "should take as a compliment", explains Dr Alex Crow.
Trying to tell you something
"It's not just coincidence. It's called a greeting stretch", says the Chief Veterinary Officer at The Net Vet. "It's more than just shaking off a nap. It's a sign that your dog feels safe, relaxed and happy that you're home".
If your dog stretches as you arrive home, this is an intentional greeting, Dr Crow continues. And if you've ever praised them or offered affection, you may actually have reinforced the behaviour without realising.
An important warning
While there is usually a heartwarming reason behind the behaviour, it's important to keep an eye out for signs of discomfort, he warns.
It's always worth remembering that "not all stretches are about affection". A dog that regularly keeps their belly low to the ground may be experiencing pain of some kind - in which case you'll need to get in touch with your veterinarian.
