Staff at Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) shelter in Texas arrived one morning to find a Bulldog and a Chihuahua tied to the gate, wrapped in coats.

Unfortunately, abandonments like this are all too common.

But when the bulldog was scanned for a microchip, what happened next stunned everyone.

Missing dog

The Bulldog, named Rome, had been missing for four years. He vanished from his California home in January 2021 after a storm blew open the garden gate. Despite frantic searches and flyers, his family never found him.

Now, thousands of miles away in Texas, Rome had finally been found, thanks to being double microchipped. When APA! reached out, his family were overwhelmed.

Emotional reunion

After driving across states, they finally reunited with their long-lost pup. As soon as Rome saw them, he wagged and leaned in, instantly recognising the people he hadn’t seen since he was a puppy.

“We are so excited to see him,” his family said. “It’s absolutely incredible.”

APA! shared the emotional reunion, and Rome’s mum offered a final reminder: “Chip your dogs because you just never know.”
