When humane agents received reports that a cat was trapped in a freezer, they rushed to the scene. Then they discovered there was more to the story.

When the Youngstown Police Department received a tip that a cat had been locked in a gas station freezer, they alerted Animal Charity of Ohio

Officers rushed to the scene, rescuing a black and white cat they later named Kali.

In safe hands

Kali is now in very good hands, and she has "been receiving lots of love and care" from the rescue.

Shockingly, her story revealed something that shook officers to their core.

When they scanned the cat to track down her owner, the team discovered an unsettling connection. It turned out that Kali shared an owner with Koda, who entered the facility in January having been shot in the neck.

The poor pup was paralysed following the shooting, and left to suffer before she was taken in by the rescue.

Ongoing investigation

Thankfully, both animals were found just in time. Koda is now being cared for by a foster family, and with ongoing therapy she can lift her head and run again.

“The investigation is looking into the fact that the animal was put into the freezer and abandoned there and also the safety aspect of an animal being shot and then not subsequently receiving veterinary care”, Jane MacMurchy told Fox 8.

The team is hopeful that the owner of both animals will face criminal charges in due course.
