Legendary actor Gene Hackman, 95, Betsy Arakawa, 65, and their dog were found dead at their Santa Fe Summit home on 26 February and it's still unclear what caused their deaths.
The couple's two other dogs were found alive.
Dogs with family friend
According to the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office, the surviving dogs were found safe and are now in the care of a family friend. A statement confirmed that the county’s Animal Control Division worked with the couple’s family to ensure the pets’ wellbeing.
While the names of the dogs have not been disclosed, both were reportedly in good health when found. One was discovered loose on the property, while the other was beside Arakawa in the bathroom. The deceased dog was located nearby.
Devoted pet owners
Friends of Hackman and Arakawa described them as devoted pet owners who frequently rescued German Shepherds and cared for them responsibly.
The cause of death for Hackman, Arakawa, and their deceased dog has yet to be determined. Medical data suggests that Hackman had been deceased for nine days before discovery.
The couple, married since 1991, had lived in Santa Fe since the French Connection and Unforgiven star retired from acting in 2004.
