Firefighters in California swooped in to save the life of a terrified dog, who had become trapped in the rapid waters of an aqueduct.

The dog was only spotted by chance, after emergency workers launched an air search for a missing person.

He had slipped into the water, and was clinging on to the aqueduct structure, stranded and unable to get to shore.

"Crews quickly assessed the situation and recognised the urgency, as the swift current of the aqueduct posed an immediate threat to the animal's safety."

The rescue team was lowered from the air, managing to secure the dog and lift him to safety.

Narrow escape

Pure coincidence meant the black and white dog was rescued just in time.

Thanks to the quick thinking and coordination of different departments, he will now be able to recover from his ordeal surrounded by the love and care of his family.
